Breaker Boys

In order to make ends meet, miners often had to bring their young boys in to the mines to work 10-12 hours a day as breaker boys. Their job was to separate out impurities from the coal. This photograph was taken by photographer Lewis Hines in 1911. What can we learn by examining this photograph? Here is a link to another activity:
